Cities have long included drainage systems that whisk away stormwater, but WSUD includes features that allow precipitation to percolate back into the ground. Water-sensitive urban design WSUD is an approach to urban planning that integrates sustainable urban water-cycle management into the built environment to achieve positive ecological and sociocultural outcomes. Its strategies, such as stormwater reuse and water-efficient landscaping , can increase sustainability while making communities better places to live and work. As urbanization and climate change progress, WSUD is likely to become increasingly important. The concept of WSUD was developed in Australia in the early s as a move toward sustainable drainage systems for stormwater and away from traditional infrastructure strategies.

Water Sensitive Design

Water is a vital element of landscape as it provides biodiverse habitats and controls local climate. Climate change is altering the relationship we have with this element: prolonged dry periods and flushing rainy events are causing severe damages to city infrastructures and to our own well-being.

We face increasing challenges due to unprecedented meteorological events and diffused urbanization; thus, we need to identify effective strategies to cope with climate emergencies by adapting with nature.

Our cities have been working in the wrong way for too long: rain water is channeled as fast as possible to sewage system losing its cooling and irrigation potential, large surfaces remain sealed thus increasing HIE and runoff, rivers are forced into artificial walls with very low recreational and ecological potential. Now we are paying for those mistakes with severe floods and poor environmental conditions in urban and peri-urban areas.

Whatever we call it, this nature-based approach is proving successful because of its multi-benefit asset. Water Sensitive Design couples ecosystem-led measures with circular processes, thus improving resource management and involving different planning sectors.

New wet-ecosystems not only support urban drainage but also provide novel habitats for animal and plant biodiversity, thus strengthening their resilience to diseases and sudden meteorological events. We need to make space for the rivers, to unseal as much as possible impervious underutilized areas such as parking lots and flat roofs and create parks to manage rainwater and tie up people to its cycle.

The elements associated with the use of the water for agricultural purposes in the Mediterranean context, as canals, ditches, irrigation ponds and cisterns, as well as the terrain modeling with terraces to retain rainwater, are some of the archetypal elements that compose a distinctive anthropic landscape, and provide, in addition to tested solutions for an efficient water management, a set of morphological patterns to design these new parks.
