The raspberry bush or rubus idaeus is a suckering and bushy shrub that produces raspberries, a fruit full of health benefits and virtues.

Its branches can reach 2 m high. The raspberry grows wild on the edge of the forest (its etymology comes from the contraction of "wild strawberry") but also in the mountainous areas of Europe.

Raspberries: for the record

Both soft and fleshy, raspberries are also very fragrant and delight gourmets for dessert, jam, raspberry jelly and other coulis.

On the medical plan, the raspberry was once very coveted. It has been cultivated since the end of the Middle Ages.

The raspberry grows wild in many regions, but it was thanks to the arrival of recurrent raspberries that the crop developed in the 1950s.

Raspberries and their health benefits

  • With the raspberry leaves, do you make a tisane diuretic and very pleasantly scented (60 g of leaves per liter of water).
  • Raspberry leaves are also astringent, they are very effective in case of intestinal problems, against diarrhea in particular.
  • In external use, raspberry leaves are particularly effective: as a gargle if you have sore throat, in mouthwashes if you suffer canker sores, in lotion on ulcers and in application on irritated eyes.
  • Raspberry leaves tone the uterus. They are used in herbal tea (mixed with lady's mantle, lemon balm, nettle, millefeuille and St. John's Wort in equal amounts) to prepare for labor by increasing the strength of the contractions.
  • Raspberry is a delicious, refreshing, diuretic and laxative fruit. Very low in sucrose, it is not prohibited for diabetics.
  • Raspberries contain folic acid (vitamin B9) : it is therefore recommended for pregnant women at the start of pregnancy. It is also said to be able to help prevent Alzheimer's disease.

  • Internal use:

Infusion of raspberry leaves: 40 to 50 grams of leaves per liter of water. Let steep for 10 minutes. Consume 3 or 4 cups per day. Against diarrhea or before childbirth (drink from the 7th month of pregnancy).

Raspberry syrup : cook the same weight of sugar and fruit juice until desired consistency. This syrup refreshes enormously in case of feverish illness, it is also diuretic.

Raspberry vinegar: Exquisite, it is prepared by covering the fruits, confined in a jar, with white vinegar (about 1 liter of vinegar for 1.5 kg of fruit). Leave to macerate for 10 days, filter. You can sweeten this syrup with sugar or honey. If you want a household raspberry liqueur, swap the vinegar for white brandy.

  • External use: all the above preparations, infusion of leaves, syrup, vinegar or raspberry vinegar syrup are effective in gargles against tonsillitis.

Growing raspberries for its benefits

The raspberry appreciates partial shade or light sun (north of the Loire) as well as slightly acidic, fairly humus-bearing, well-draining soils, neither too dry in summer nor too waterlogged in winter.

Raspberry leaves are astringent, tonics, depurative and diuretics.

The organic acids contained in raspberries contribute to rebalance blood pH after a sporting effort.
